Which Hospitals in Colombia Accept the Va Foreign Medical Program (fmp)?

While the VA Foreign Medical Program (FMP) allows you to receive care from providers throughout Colombia, most veterans in our community utilize the advanced medical infrastructure in the Antioquia region, specifically in Medelln.

It is important to understand that the FMP functions primarily on a reimbursement basis. While we can help you coordinate with local providers and provide Spanish-language templates to help clinics understand the FMP, you should be prepared for the following:

• Out-of-Pocket Payments: Most local providers in Colombia do not bill the VA directly. You will likely need to pay for your care upfront and then submit VA Form 10-7959f-1 along with an itemized receipt (factura) and your clinical history (historia clnica) for reimbursement.
• Pre-Authorization: For all non-emergency services, you must obtain written pre-authorization from the VA at least 2–4 weeks before your appointment to ensure the costs are covered.
• Emergency Care: In the event of an emergency, you can seek care at any hospital, but you must notify the FMP within 72 hours to remain eligible for reimbursement.
