Does the Va Fmp Cover Non-service Connected Conditions in Colombia?

The VA Foreign Medical Program (FMP) is specific in its scope for veterans living abroad. Generally, the FMP only covers service-connected conditions.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the program is designed to reimburse eligible veterans for medically necessary care, including doctor visits, hospital stays, and prescription drugs, specifically for conditions that the VA has officially rated as service-connected.

While we provide hands-on FMP navigation and guidance for our residents in Cocorn1, it is important to keep the following in mind:

  • Non-Service Connected Care: Routine physicals and preventive screenings are typically excluded from FMP coverage. You should plan to pay for these out of pocket.
  • Excluded Services: Dental, vision, or elective procedures are generally not covered unless they have been specifically authorized by the VA.
  • Eligibility: Coverage is usually available to veterans who are enrolled in VA healthcare and have a service-connected disability rating of 50% or more, or those receiving a VA pension.

We recommend that you verify your specific eligibility and covered services directly with the VA FMP portal or office before scheduling treatments. While we can help you coordinate with VA-approved providers in the Antioquia region and gather necessary documentation, the final determination on what is covered rests solely with the VA.

Note: We are not a medical facility; all medical questions should be directed to a healthcare professional or the VA Foreign Medical Program (FMP).
